Moving on with OD/AD integration one should ask himself ‘What if?’ What if something fails what should we do.

I’m talking about components of the setup such as Active Directory, DNS, Open Directory etc. If all of sudden one of those newspapers loose their connection to the internet – what would happen? Read »

Finally I’m back after a long spring/summer Vancouver Island ‘trip’. Back here at Grandview office everything is same as it was when I left. Except for new equipment that has been received for our never-ending projects.

Maybe Island installation project is finished, but I have to support, oh well about 100, new computers and users. Read »

It’s about time… Last week of Island OS X migration is behind the corner and I cannot wait any much longer for all this to over. It’s been a great experience in some cases, in some others it was pain in the @$$. With last newspaper in OS X and InDesign I can relax and wait for next challenges my life is going to throw my way.

Next challenge, of course, would be migrating dozen LMP newspapers to OD/AD scheme (more about it in my OS X Setup posting) But before that there is a lot of ‘cleaning up’ to do, tying loose ends, in other words.
But, I’m running s bit ahead of myself. Let’s recall what was done in last 4 months, shall we? Read »

For what reason, I don’t know, I was punished and sent to install Windows PCs for sales people in Nanaimo Daily News.

What’s been the main reason I switched to Apple long years ago ruined my day again.
It might sound like an easy task, but believe me it was not. Sure you can open each one of them, load applications on it, update all of them, set up with user and that’s it. Well, not really. First of all, even-though installing applications on each one of them wouldn’t be a big deal since it’s only MS Office they need, it’s updating it. We are talking about downloading more than 30Mb updates for Windows (who am I kidding, it must of been all 70Mb, but at this point I don’t remember for sure) and downloading 50Mb for office and then 30Mb more. So all together I would have to pull more than 500Mb of updates from internet. Sure, you can say that Apple Mac OS X updates are even larger, but at least you can streamline their downloads. Read »

Well, it’s been almost 3 weeks without entries. I’ve been setting computers up in most beautiful location yet – Ucluelet BC. If you don’t know where it is, you might have heard of Tofino, well it’s just north of it. There’s no corporate class hotels – there are cabins, there’s no franchise restaurants – there are corner cafes, everything is different there. People are different, food is different, atmosphere is different – those two weeks I’ve been there felt like vacation. Read »

After having some issues couple of weeks ago with our main OD master, I had to promote existing replica to master and downgrade master down to replica. Well today all that is going back to it’s original setup. What was replica should become master and all replicas of old master will become replicas of new master. Sounds ‘Star Warish’? Well, you are reading IT blog after all.

Promoting replica wasn’t an easy task. For some reason I started getting message “Unable to access domain controller.” and “This computer is unable to access the domain controller for an unknown reason”. Read »

After having some DNS, DHCP and what other issues we had at Port Alberni, I’ve decided to get some help from ‘above’. I’ve contacted Apple and have setup a meeting to go other our setup.

In the meantime I’m installing OD replica in each of our location. First replica went into Port Alberni, and the reliability and speed have increased significantly. They don’t have to contact Nanaimo for authentication scheme anymore, all goes through local replica. Read »

Well, again, I can say certainly that Duncan is so far the easiest deployment I’ve experienced.
Let’s recall what has been happening with OS X setup so far going all the way back to my first OS X 10.4 Server setup:

Once again I’m coming back from Vancouver Island on Thursday afternoon. This week was one of those weeks when you fall in love with your job, again. Everything was smooth. Installation, networking, Domain binding… even place I stayed in was one of the best – ‘Oceanfront Grand Resort and Marina‘.
