Browsing my favourite site of all photography, DPReview, I came across their posting about craigslist ad and respond published on PetaPixel. It is a topic of wedding photographers: how much they charge and how some people think that those prices are outrages.

My first reaction was: why DPReview, professional site, would post “news” not worthy nor professional enough to discuss. Opinions about “over-priced” products could be everywhere: Walmart vs Gucci, Hyundai vs Bentley, Dom Perignon vs Henkell Trocken.

I shot wedding before and I do realize how much work it is, but I am not defending nor supporting photographer Nikki Wagner, I actually think it is unprofessional to try to defend your prices – if you are professional, and you value your work, that’s the only reasoning behind your prices, not how much it cost you to run your business.

Here are two examples:

Scenario (a) – with today’s technology and power of photo editing software you can take photos with Canon T2i – perfect little camera. Cost: $869,99 CDN, and you get two lenses. For additional $126,99 CDN you can get good enough 50mm portrait lens. This camera shoots in RAW, so using great software DxO Optics Pro, you can ‘fix’ distortion and even color process images like it came from 5D Mark II, all for $99. As for photo manipulation, there are tons of software out there, which perform same functions as Photoshop, if you know what you are doing: free Gimp, or PixelMator. At the end of the day, as my mentor Terry Cioni once said: “the most important thing in photography is not camera nor lenses but two inches behind viewfinder”. For other points outlined in the article: hosting – I pay only $8,95 for DreamHost and it has unlimited space and bandwidth; don’t buy car – rent it at the time you need it, it’s like $30 per day etc.

Scenario (b) – when photographer is charging 5K for a wedding, it is not just equipment and supplies that are included in that price – it is years of experience, hours of photo manipulation and experimenting and strive for perfection as an artist. As a perfectionist in my own photography, I do understand that it’s not pure hardware/software cost – it is much more than that.

So with all that said, my final thought is that both craigslist ad poster and photographer who wrote the article both have valid points. But both DPReview and Nikki Wagner lost their argument, failed to make a point and came out as un-professional. Real artist do not have to ‘explain’ to others why his/hers art cost that much – the price is set and people have freedom to choose to either pay it or not. And as a professional photographer news site, dpreview, please stick to what you do the best – review equipment, post photography news, and provide interesting professional grade articles. Leave ‘childish’ arguments to somebody else. People have choice to either wear Walmart $29 jeans or pay $400 for D&G, drive $13,000 Hyundai or $400,000 Bentley – and it does not make them as suckers to spend that much money nor cowards to charge that much.

Happy shooting!

It is now second day since nestlings grew up and flew away. It is so quite on the balcony now.

The whole Saturday birds parents were trying to get their kids out of the birds house, out of the nest. It was nature miracle to watch. I’ve filmed some of it, some of it you had to see. Basically parents were calling them from the branch on outside of our balcony and teasing them with food – bugs and ants. They would fly very close to the nest, where those hungry nestlings were going crazy loud, and fly back on the tree. They would sit on the brick wall, right next to the birds house, calling nestlings out.

Ant then, in a split second, nestling would fly out… and once he’s gone – he is gone…

Sunday morning, parents were still working on getting rest of them out of the nest, and by 11am all were gone. It is empty nest now, and they will not be back until next year to grow their family once again.

Sunday, while having barbeque outside, I showed video on my iPhone to my father. You could clearly hear birds in that video, and one of the parents, I guess, flew and sit on the branch right next to us. I guess they were a bit worrying that some of their kids were left behind.

It’s been almost a week from my first posting of new birds family that now lives on our balcony in the birds house. Nestlings have grown up, and might fly any day now. Mom and dad are still caring for them – bringing bugs, removing escrements – doing what good parents do for their kids.

It is sad, that pretty soon, one day I walk out on balcony and the whole family will be gone. And it will not be until next year till they come back.

For now, I will make sure I try to film them everyday to get a last glimpse at this nature wonder.

I guess it is yearly thing now, our new tenants have had their nestlings couple of weeks ago and now are working full swing trying to feed them. It is pretty hard job for this family, not sure how many nestlings are there, but by the noise they are making – there are quite a bit.

I’ve decided not to disturb them this year and just film from outside. Here is what came out of it:

Today is huge day in Blogosphere (not sure if this word is being used in English blogging community) – it is Blog Action Day. Over 12,000 sites are participating in this event which is in it’s second year. Theme of this year event is – poverty.

shapeimage_5

I took all day to think on what I can write about. Fighting poverty is amazing topic and many people has been talking about it, a bit less actually done something about it even less dedicated their life to it. What I would like to talk is – controversies about poverty. To do that I would have two roles: heart and common sense. I have to let you all know, that I do share opinions of both of those sides, that’s why I bring it up in this form. I do not accept white or black of these kind of topics (others include religion, homeless and other politics) I will try to discuss two parts of the story. I will have it in dialog form.

So, let’s start. Read »

11These are official photos of new, 2010 Mazda3 revealed today.

Why I write about this? I owned 2004 Mazda3 and I think it’s waaay better than any Civic or Corolla for young generation. I really liked handling, comfort and sport agility of the little guy. Read »

Yesterday I visited McMillan Space Center for Adobe presentation of InDesign CS4. It was more like training on InDesign CS3/CS4.

shapeimage_19

Even-though there are some exciting new features in CS4, CS3 has a bunch of them that I haven’t even knew about. I will explain more in next articles once I get my notes together.

One of the reasons I called this entry ‘Where the heart is…’ is because InDesign got my heart pumping. And I mean really pumping… Excitement overflowed me at first, but then I realized that at my current position I will not have opportunity to use any of those things, too bad…

And no, I don’t mean I am graphic designer, that’s in the past. I did design some websites, some logos, corporate identities. But that’s not what I mean. I mean solutions. Troubleshooting issues, optimizing workflow, streamlining the process – that’s what I liked.

Newspaper business got really embedded in my soul. Looking back into my adventures on the Vancouver Island last year, I would do it again.

So that’s where my heart is.

Well, I’m back! FileMaker DevCon was a blast! Educational – maybe, inspirational – definitely!

shapeimage_110

One of the coolest things I’ve learned from it is that FileMaker is not boring database piece of software, numbers, tables, records, calculations – you can do cool things with them, all of them!

Those outside of North America figured out a way of connecting power and ease of FileMaker databasing (I know it’s not a word, but I will use it) with coolness of latest JS technologies. AJAX, Flex, CSS – I’ll be there…

Looking back at my experience as web designer/developer I found new tool that an crunch numbers in the background while delivering rich experience to end-users.

Now I just have to finish with servers and move on to FileMaker development… and I will develop

After just one month, I can say – new place definitely brings new challenges…

shapeimage_111

All those independent consultants, let me tell you something – when you set a company with servers, network etc. make sure you set it up as your own… What I mean? Simple, looking at what I have to deal with currently – servers are set up as part of some kind of crazy experiment – “can we do it?”

I remember my first server with 10.4 I’ve set up at Abbotsford Times, at least I got a lot of support from Apple Canada, thank you Brian. These servers, DNS settings, computer setup – a nightmare…

Servers need to be rebuilt – why would you change users IDs? – DNS needs to be reconfigured – no need for .ca domain, we will not host web nor email servers…

Oh, by the way, I’m writing this while seated at the United airplane.. en-route from San Diego to Phoenix for FileMaker Developers Conference – another challenge I would have to face, once back to Van, BC – I’m not sure if FileMaker server was configured correctly, knowing it was same people setting it up…

Enough negative, flight is being delayed, blood is boiling, relax Anton, relax…

All of the sudden we have 8 members added to our family…

shapeimage_113

No, I don’t have more kids, and we didn’t get our relatives visiting us… Don’t even guess…

img_4806We’ve got another family in our apartment, better said – on our balcony… Yes, birds…

We, me and my son Matthew, have build a bird house two years ago, in Burnaby Village museum, on Canada Day’s Celebration. And this year we’ve got a family moved in…

img_0012It started quite interesting, I had my ashtray hidden in that bird’s house, in my smoking days… Then, all of the sudden, earlier this year, when I stepped out on the balcony to smoke a cigar, I reached into the bird’s house, to get my ashtray and found something soft, it was bird’s nest…

Later they laid eggs and we’ve been watching them using tethered camera on tripod.

img_4987This afternoon, as usually, I glanced into a hole of the bird’s house, and, in usual spot where the bird was, I’ve noticed something yellow. I guessed that it was little birds, so grabbed my camera and, try not to disturb them too much, took couple of shots.
